Tag Royale

Tag Royale began with a simple idea: make tag feel faster, less predictable and worth playing for more than one round. From there it grew into movement abilities, changing dangers, a proper hub and far more systems than I first expected.

What I made

The simple game I kept expanding

The heart of it is still easy to understand: enter a round, chase or escape, then come back and try again. Everything around that loop is there to make the movement, pressure and return to the next match feel better.

  • Join matches through the hub and queue into rounds
  • Run, chase, sprint and use unlockable movement, defence and control abilities
  • See round results, player stats, and recap screens after matches
  • Unlock progress rewards, cosmetics, equipment, boosts, and more

Why I made it

See how far a familiar idea could go

I liked the clarity of tag, but I wanted more decisions inside the chase and more reasons to return afterward. The challenge has been adding depth without losing the simple reason the game is fun.

  • Quick rounds keep the pace moving
  • Round mutations help matches feel less predictable
  • Player vs Player and Player vs Bot play add variety
  • Rewards and progression give players reasons to return
  • The hub adds more to do outside the main round loop

Current stage

A large working build that still needs real playtesting

A lot of the game exists, but systems on paper are not the same as a fun public game. Movement, balance, rewards and the first-time player experience still need proper testing with other people.

What comes next

Prove that the round is fun before adding more

The next important lesson will come from players, not another list of features. The core chase, movement and round pressure need to feel good before the wider systems can matter.

What it offers

It became much bigger than one game mode

The build now includes a hub, progression, cosmetics, rewards and a range of player-facing systems. That breadth is real, but the match still has to remain the reason everything else exists.

Player Experience

Easy to enter, with a reason to return

The mix of match action, post-round feedback, unlocks, and hub features helps the game feel active even beyond a single round, which makes it stronger for longer-term play.

Movement

Built to feel more active

Sprinting is joined by unlockable abilities such as Dash, Blink Step and Phase Veil. Other abilities can hide a player, create a decoy, reveal opponents, freeze a target, slow nearby players or place a trap.

Match Variety

Extra danger during the round

Tag Royale is not only about player-versus-player pressure. The game also includes player-versus-bot play, and a hunter that can spawn during the match to increase tension and keep players reacting.

Rewards

Reasons to keep coming back

Progress rewards, unlocks, cosmetics, and recap screens help each round feed into a bigger sense of momentum, so players are not only chasing one win and leaving.

Safety Board

Encouraging safer online play

Tag Royale also includes a safety board that teaches players how to stay safer online. It is there to make the game more responsible for younger players while still feeling like part of the experience.

Built into the game loop

Players see online safety guidance as part of the experience, not buried in a footer link.

Players are rewarded for reading it

The game encourages players to engage with the advice instead of skipping straight past it.

Supports younger players better

It helps Tag Royale feel more responsible while still staying fun and playable.

The match

A full round system,
not only a tag tool.

Queue, arrival and round setup

The HUB and GameMAP have different jobs. The HUB manages the portal queue and sends players into the match place. The GameMAP then handles arrival, lobby state, spawn selection, team and role setup, late joins and the move into an active round.

Round state is controlled by the server so a player’s device cannot simply declare a win, reward or successful tag.

Server-checked tagging and round results

The tag tool uses server-side hit checking for player and bot targets. The round controller tracks who is active, who is the tagger and whether player or bot tagging is allowed for that part of the match.

At the end, recap screens can show results, XP, coins and event bonuses. The saved profile and progression services carry valid rewards back into the wider game.

The Freeze Hunter changes the pressure

A Freeze Hunter can enter the arena, choose valid targets and chase them across the map. A caught player is frozen for a limited time with a visible effect. When the event ends, the hunter can leave behind XP and coin orbs for players to collect.

This adds a shared danger during the normal player-versus-player chase and gives the round a temporary player-versus-environment problem.

Abilities and progression

New choices unlock
as the player grows.

Movement

Dash, Blink Step and Phase Veil

Dash creates a quick burst forward. Blink Step moves the player a short distance in their current direction. Phase Veil provides a brief window where tags, roots, slows and freezes can be ignored.

These abilities use cooldowns and have upgrade branches for details such as distance, force, duration and recovery time.

Deception and awareness

Invisibility, Decoy Clone and Reveal Ping

Invisibility hides the player for a short period. Decoy Clone creates a moving copy intended to distract opponents. Reveal Ping outlines nearby players on the opposing role so the user can make a better chase or escape decision.

Control

Freeze, Shock Pulse and Trap Beacon

Freeze is aimed at a chosen target. Shock Pulse slows nearby players, while Trap Beacon waits for the first actor to trigger it and then applies a root or slow.

Ability slots unlock across early levels, and the skill tree lets progression improve defined parts of each power instead of replacing it with a completely different rule.

The HUB

A place to prepare,
customise and return to.

Profile, inventory and equipment

The player profile stores progression and owned items. The menu and equipment screens show inventory, support item use and allow owned trails, auras and badges to be equipped. Cosmetic visibility can be controlled separately for the player and for other people.

Shop, loot boxes and boosts

The HUB includes a shop, cosmetic previews, coin-based purchases, boosts and a loot-box presentation with odds and free-item handling. Server services remain responsible for purchases, rewards and inventory changes rather than trusting the client interface.

Cosmetics can be previewed and some can be sold back through the game’s economy rules.

Things to do between rounds

The HUB includes portal and queue areas, NPC dialogue and reward interactions, an obstacle course, world leaderboard, music, settings and small interactive world pieces. The safety board is part of this space so online-safety advice is visible inside the experience rather than hidden outside it.
